- Watch the following video. Stop the video at 4:25. I would watch (or re-watch) this just before you start on your sketches to refresh yourself with the goals you need to be successful.
STEP 3: DUE THURSDAY JUNE 4| Flag Design Thumbnail Sketches
- Complete the Flag Design Thumbnail Template below
- Base your sketches directly off the brainstorming list in your approved Flag Design Planner
- Each sketch must include an emblem/charge, a divided field and a maximum of three colors (unless given permission for four)
- Use a minimum of three different patterns as shown in Common Flag Patterns in the lesson plan
- Must be done with PENCIL and PAPER
- Email me (john.mattingly@fcps.org) a photo of them named Flag Design Thumbnails_LastnameF, As another reminder, all misnamed files I receive are points off your grade. Make sure you follow all the guidelines/expectations BEFORE YOU SEND ME ANYTHING.
- Once your thumbnails are approved begin work on your design in Photoshop IMMEDIATELY.

You have two assignments due on Tuesday, one on Wednesday and one on Friday.
STEP 1: DUE TUESDAY MAY 26| Flag Design Video
- This is truly one of the best presentations I have EVER seen. Not just on flags, but on any topic. This is how presentations should be done. Insightful, informative, funny, with multimedia support to engage the audience.
- Also, the guy he talks about in his video, Ted Kaye, is president of the North American Vexillological Association and is someone I have done graphic design for. He asked me to redesign the NAVA Seal, which is now on their website. Check it out HERE.

STEP 3: DUE WEDNESDAY MAY 27| Select Flag Subject Selection
- Select what subject you would like to design/redesign a flag for, A flag can be designed for virtually anything. Here is a small sample:

- Vacation spot
- Re-design an existing national, state or municipal flag (for example: United States, Delaware or Middletown)

- check out Graphic Icon student projects in the Level 1 Galleries (including Archives)
- create thumbnail sketches
- minimum three DIFFERENT design styles
- simplify, simplify, SIMPLIFY! (see Illustration vs. Icon on page 4)
- drastically reduce the amount of detail in the object- less is more!
- reduce it down until, if you took anything else out, you would no longer recognize it
- try reducing parts down geometrically (rectangles, ellipses, triangles, etc.)
- explore both design styles (see Positive vs. Negative Space on page 5)
- exterior outlines (black outlines with no fill)
- interior shapes (filled shapes with empty outlines)
- explore different angles
- frontal, profile, perspective, rotated, etc.
- follow Procedure steps five through seven on page 2 of the lesson plan to complete your Graphic Icon project
- make sure you set your Pen and Shape tools to "Paths" in the Control Panel at the top
- review your project against Tips for Success, Requirements and Five Quick Questions on page 3
- submit according to the guidelines provided on the Critical Information page. Make sure your file is named Graphic Icon_LastnameF.

PEN TOOL PRACTICE
ASSIGNMENT 1: DUE WEDNESDAY MAY 13| Perform the video tutorial on how to create a block capital letter J using the Shape and Pen tools. Save your file as: Pen Tool Practice J_LastnameF. Choose whatever fill color and stroke color you want but stick to the brush size and hardness shown in the video. Share your file through Adobe CC according to the procedures provided on the Critical Information page by the end of Wednesday, May 13.

Attach your large format image (800 px by 800 px minimum) of your selected object and email me by the end of Friday, May 15. Send more than one option in case I reject an idea for any reason. Save them as Graphic Icon Source 1_LastnameF, Graphic Icon Source_LastnameF, etc.

- choose something you enjoy (favorite activity, hobby, sport, class, career goal, etc.)
- STEP 2: Download image
- IMPORTANT: this MUST be a photograph
- you may not under any circumstances work from an existing graphic/artwork/clipart
- go to google.com and select Images from the top menu
- type in your query
- go to Filter (far right) then select Image Size and select Large (minimum 800 pixels by 800 pixels)

STEP 1: Watch my videos on my favorite pro and college sports logos provided below. It is important to listen to the audio so you hear the type of explanations I will be looking for in your assignment (further below).

STEP 2: Select your most favorite and least favorite NFL logos from the slideshow below. This slideshow is not visible on cell phones (I don;t know why). It must be viewed on a computer.
STEP 3: DUE THURSDAY MAY 7 | Complete the Google Form (link below). Answers must explain WHY you like or dislike with supported evidence.

ASSIGNMENT 1: DUE TUESDAY APRIL 28 | Perform the Bezier Game pen tool tutorial for 30 minutes. Email me at john.mattingly@fcps.org to let me know you completed 30 minutes. Click HERE for the tutorial.

STEP 1: Install texture brushes from folder below into Photoshop
- Download Texture Brushes zip folder to your computer
- Right click on folder and select Extract All
- Check "Show extracted files when complete" (this will open the files in a new window) then click on "Extract" button
- In this new folder that just opened up, you should see 16 brushes called "Grunge" and Splatters. Select all the brushes then right click and select "Copy"
- Open a This PC (or My Computer) window then open your C drive (named "Windows (C:))
- Open "Program Files" folder
- Open "Adobe" folder
- Open "Adobe Photoshop" folder
- Open "Presets" folder
- Open "Brushes" folder and paste the new brushes into it
